Epic Mountain Bike Series returns again for the 20th year! Fondly known as the Winter Park Mountain Bike Series, the Epic Mountain Bike Series is a much beloved and well known Colorado mountain bike series of events that cater to beginner and advanced riders. Keep your eye out as some pro riders have been known to race in this series over the years!

What makes this mountain bike series so special? It begins with the dedication of the Competition Center, the division at Winter Park Resort that manages all of the on mountain events/competitions and runs the Epic Mountain Bike Series. The crew at the Competition Center really loves the sport of mountain biking and ensures that the race courses are challenging, fun and safe. Over the years some of the race courses have changed slightly either due to weather or input from the competitors. Now who can say that other mountain bike race series will take competitor input into consideration when routing and designing a race course?

The Epic Mountain Bike Series makes getting into the series easy for beginners to pros. The event is divided into categories by age, gender and ability level. Opportunity to move from one category to another is easy to do as competitors get better in their mountain biking and racing ability. Often after a summer of racing in one category and placing in the top 3 spots in that race category, competitors will move up to the next category.

The Colorado Freeride Festival returns again to Winter Park Colorado July 26 – 29, 2012. Winter Park Resort along with Trestle Bike Park will host this beloved world class mountain bike event. Formerly known as Crankworx, the Freeride Festival promises to feature some of the best mountain bikers in the world. Come and join in on the action as competitors compete for over $35,000 in prize money. The four day event will feature events such as Slopestyle, Enduro Racing, Cross Country, Trials and Pond Crossing Events. Competitors will love the challenge of the events while spectators will get a thrill watching these top notch athletes compete with one another. More on Winter Park Mountain Bike and Downhill Mountain Biking Events. Winter Park Colorado has been known as Mountain Bike Capital USA for a number of years now but over the past few years, the bike scene here has really erupted. With the emergence of downhill biking a number of years ago, Winter Park Resort burst onto the scene when it created Trestle Bike Park, named one of the fastest growing bike parks in North America. The downhill mountain bike park boasts 40 miles of trail riding with 3 lifts. Riders will enjoy a variety of trail riding from jumps and features to smooth terrain for fast speeds. Trails are divided into categories beginning with easiest to most difficult.

Winter Park Resort has developed a creative way to get people into the sport of downhill mountain biking from having bike guides show you around the trail system, a bike school to learn how to ride downhill bikes and mountain bike camps. Winter Park Golf at Pole Creek

Golf anyone? We will be nearing the Winter Park golf season before you know it! As you probably have heard, spring has sprung, the snow is melting which means the golf greens are “greening up”. Pole Creek is estimating an opening date of “as soon as they can open” which is also called the shoulder season. For information on this date please email: Pole Creek Golf Info.This shoulder season or early season lasts until June 11, 2012. The high season is from June 12 – September 10 with the following shoulder season set for September 11th and as long as golf can be played.

If you have not yet visited Pole Creek to play a round of golf on the course or to have lunch at Bistro 28, this is the summer to do it. I do not play golf but have heard from so many golfers that Pole Creek is one of the best mountain courses in Colorado. I have however, had lunch at Bistro 28 outside on their fabulous deck that overlooks the Continental Divide and the golf course greens. Stunning! That is the word for it.

There is a perception out there that golf is a very expensive sport. Well, I recently checked out the Pole Creek Golf courses (www.polecreekgolf.com) website and noted that the daily rates were cheaper than a lift ticket for the 2011-2012 ski season! I have not seen rates like this in years. Be sure to check out the very affordable shoulder season rates and happy hour rates. You can even sign up to receive coupons on golf, now that is a deal!

If you are thinking about staying up in Winter Park and playing a round each day or want to come up with a group of friends, how about staying right on the course? We actually have three large homes through our Destinations West property that are located on the course.

1. Our first home is called: The Fairways and is located on the fairways. This five bedroom home has it all from two master suites, two laundry rooms, a private hot tub and decks with amazing views.

2. Our second home is Winter Wonderland. This home is loaded with amenities from a private hot tub, laundry room private deck to game room.

Winter Park NASTAR Nationals Presented by Nature Valley

This has to be one of the coolest events yet this winter! The 2012 Nature Valley NASTAR Nationals will be held at Winter Park Resort, Colorado on March 22 – 25th.
This event is huge with four combined events bringing together the recreational and professional skier/snowboarders together. Each event has a different sort of theme but is generally team centered, which I love, and also focused on encouraging the love of downhill skiing and snowboarding among the young and old alike. Families are also a big part of the NASTAR Nationals.

A few months ago I wrote about a new Winter Park BBQ restaurant that was going to open up in our cute little resort town on our other blog Destinations West Blog At the time I did not know the name of the place so just made a mention of this new dining spot. Today, during our big blizzard this morning See Posting on our wall, I had the opportunity to check out the Smoke House BBQ located in downtown Winter Park. The new restaurant looks so different with the new interior, the updated exterior. I have to say that the new Winter Park business looked really great! The wonderful smell of the smokehouse was wonderful and that is coming from a vegetarian! I hope one day they make BBQ tofu! Yum! I began outside taking photos for my blog of the sign and the building then walked to the door to see if I could take a peek inside, but the doors were locked. I walked away a bit disappointed when the owner of the business came to the entrance, opened the door and let me in. I then had the pleasure of meeting Michael Hardman, one of the owners, of the Smoke House BBQ restaurant. He let me take photos of the interior, see below! The menu has all you could want with meats ranging from: brisket, pork shoulder, Red Bird – All Natural Chicken and All Natural Hot links. The Smoke House BBQ even has Pork Ribs lightly seasoned with their own special rub and smoked with apple wood yum! If you want wings they have them, they are of course slow smoked so you know they have to be good! In fact Michael told me that they slow smoke all their meats for great flavor and tenderness, the regular smoke time is between 12 – 15 hours. One thing I learned is that the Smoke House BBQ takes their time to smoke their meat, so you know it is done right! Wonderful sides to complete your meal include Chow or coleslaw, baked beans, mashed potatoes, kettle chips, mac & cheese. Sauces range from Hardman’s Gold Sauce, Sweet and Tangy, Hickory Thick and Colorado Kicker Hot.

Sandwiches and lunchtime treats with fun names include:

The Carver (Low and slow smoked beef brisket)

The Face Shot (Pork shoulder with special seasonings)

The Hucker (Chicken topped with the house white sauce)

The Link (All natural hot links piled high)

The Dogger (Twice smoked brisket trimmings with BBQ Gold)

Mogul Masher (Bowl of goodies from 1 meat, 2 sides and sauce all layered together)

Workers Lunch (any sandwich plus 1 side and soda)

Lighter fare includes salads like House or Caesar Salad. To make it extra special add pork or brisket, chicken or hot links. I have to say this type of fare is the food pyramid to perfection – veggies plus your proteins! Kids even have options from the Little Sammie (Choice of brisket/pork or chicken plus side) but in a smaller size, the Good Dog (All natural hot dot with one side) or Mac N Cheese (what kid doesn’t like the ideal comfort food!).

The Smoke House BBQ also serves “Ready to Go Party Packs” – from the Triple Chair (Feeds 2 to 3), the Six Pack (Feeds 7 to 8), the High Speed Quad (Feeds 4 to 6) and the Gondola (Feeds 9 – 12). Party packs include your choice of meat, sides, buns,sauces, sodas, plates, to-go cups and utensils. No dish washing tonight!

I think you will really like this place, the owners are great, the decor is comfortable and they even have a bar with tv to watch games etc…this really is a nice addition to the Winter Park dining scene.
